The eight kootas

Ashtakoot Guna Milan compares the Moon signs and nakshatras of the two charts in eight parts, worth 1 to 8 points: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8 — 36 in all. Traditionally 18 or more is considered acceptable, though a high score does not by itself settle a match.

Nadi and Bhakoot

Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) carry the most weight. When both partners share the same Nadi, or the Moon signs fall in certain positions from each other, the koota scores zero and is called a dosha; the classical exceptions are checked and shown.

Manglik (Mangal dosha)

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagna, the Moon or Venus is called Manglik. The check shows where it comes from and the common cancellations — for example Mars in its own sign, or both partners being Manglik.
