How Vimshottari works
Vimshottari divides 120 years among the nine planets in a fixed order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Your first period is ruled by the lord of the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth, and how far the Moon had moved through it sets how much of that period was left.
Periods within periods
Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas in the same order and proportions, each Antardasha into nine Pratyantardashas, and so on. Astrologers read events mainly from the running Mahadasha and Antardasha lords and their place in the chart.
Why the birth time matters
The Moon moves about 13° a day, so a small error in the birth time shifts the dasha dates by weeks or months. Use the most exact time you have.
