Today’s Panchang

Calculating tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and Rahu Kaal for your city…

The monthly calendar, Choghadiya, horas and any other date are in the app: full Panchang · Muhurat & Choghadiya

The five limbs of the day

  • Tithi — the lunar day: each 12° the Moon gains on the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, in a waxing (Shukla) and a waning (Krishna) paksha.
  • Vara — the weekday, counted from sunrise to sunrise and ruled by a planet.
  • Nakshatra — which of the 27 lunar mansions the Moon is in, with its pada (quarter).
  • Yoga — the combined longitude of the Sun and Moon, in 27 parts; some yogas are considered inauspicious.
  • Karana — half a tithi. Vishti (Bhadra) karana is avoided for new work.

Values shown are those at local sunrise, with the time each one ends.

Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal

The daytime from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight parts. Depending on the weekday, one part is Rahu Kaal, one Yamaganda and one Gulika Kaal — times traditionally avoided for starting something important. Because they depend on your sunrise and sunset, they differ from city to city.

Abhijit and Brahma muhurat

Abhijit is the eighth of the fifteen daytime muhurtas, around local noon, and is considered favourable for most beginnings (traditionally not on Wednesdays). Brahma muhurat is the muhurta (about 48 minutes) that begins roughly 96 minutes before sunrise, valued for meditation and study.

Purnimanta and Amanta months

In North India a lunar month runs from full moon to full moon (Purnimanta); in much of the South and West it runs from new moon to new moon (Amanta). During Krishna paksha the two names differ by one month, so both are shown.

How it is calculated

Positions come from a modern astronomical model with the Lahiri ayanamsa (others can be chosen in the app’s settings). Sunrise and sunset are calculated for your exact location. Nothing is sent to a server.
